Past Springborn Smithers Projects
Past Springborn Smithers Projects
- EPA/RTI
- Fish Screening Assay Inter-Laboratory Comparison, Task Order #2: Exposures with ketoconazole, 4-t-octylphenol, prochloraz, vinclozolin and sodium dodecyl sulfate. Final Report Date: January 2008. http://www.epa.gov/scipoly/oscpendo/pubs/regaspects/index.htm.
- EPA/Battelle Marine Sciences Laboratory
- Mysid Two-Generation Test to demonstrate a mysid two-generation test method based on the 21 September 2004 proposed OECD Test Guidelines for the mysid two-generation test (OECD, 2005).
- EPA/Battelle Marine Sciences Laboratory
- Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas) Fish Screening Assay OECD Phase 1 B Follow-Up.The purpose of the work was to demonstrate the Fish Screening assay test method, based on the OECD Phase 1B study for short-term reproduction assay with the fathead minnow as described in EPA (2001).This follow-up study incorporated an increased number of replicates and used a semi-quantitative and quantitative egg-counting method.
- Ecological Committee on FIFRA Risk Assessment Methods (ECOFRAM).
- Chair of subcommittee on Aquatic Effects. ECOFRAM was organized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the American Crop Protection Association to develop tools and processes for ecological risk assessment of pesticides. Members are experts from government agencies, academia, consultants, environmental advocacy groups, and industry. ECOFRAM convened in June 1997, issued its draft report in the spring of 1999, and will finalize its report in the spring of 2000.
- Novartis Crop Protection - Tiered Probabilistic Aquatic Ecological Risk Assessment of Atrazine.
- Updated 1995 ecological risk assessment of atrazine with information from new studies; applied probabilistic assessment methods in tiered approach as a case study of ECOFRAM recommendations.
- Confidential Client - Ecological Risk Assessment of New Fungicide Active Ingredient for Canadian Registration.
- First-tier aquatic ecological risk assessment for two formulations and nine crop uses. Supplemented standard PMRA exposure scenarios with GENEEC and AgDRIFT modeling, substantially reducing estimates of risk to aquatic plants and animals. Risk characterization incorporated evaluation of extended toxicity database and microcosm studies.
- Pyrethroid Working Group - Ecological Risk Assessment of Pyrethroid Insecticides in Sediments.
- Reviewed data on toxicity, bioavailability, persistence, and partitioning of pyrethroids in freshwater sediments; results of laboratory, mesocosm, microcosm and ecological field experiments. Evaluated ecological significance of pyrethroid residues in sediments of aquatic ecosystems receiving runoff and spray drift from agricultural use. Coordinated presentation of five manuscripts for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, authored or co-authored three of these.
- Confidential Client - Ecological Risk Assessment of Herbicide Used in Marine Antifouling Paints.
- Reviewed data on ecological fate and effects of herbicide used in marine anti- fouling paints, evaluated risks to freshwater ecosystems. Directed outdoor microcosm study to measure degradation of product in estuarine water and sediments.
- Confidential Client - Ecological Assessment of Animal Health Product in Effluent from Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant.
- Reviewed environmental fate and aquatic toxicity of animal health product present in effluent from Japanese manufacturing plant. Calculated concentrations of product in water and sediment of receiving system. Assessed potential impacts on ecosystem. Designed and directed program of laboratory experimentation, field measurements, and ecological monitoring to refine results of assessment and support effluent management decisions.
- Confidential Client - Ecological Risk Assessment of an Aquatic Herbicide.
- Estimated likelihood and magnitude of effects on non-target aquatic organisms after application of a registered aquatic herbicide to lakes, reservoirs, and canals. Assessment incorporated species sensitivity distributions, comparison of formulation toxicity, analysis of measured and predicted concentrations in standing and flowing water, and discussion of mitigating factors.
- Confidential Client - Environmental Guidance for Users of Zebra Mussel Control Agent.
- Generic ecological risk assessment of new product for controlling zebra mussels in power plant cooling systems. Determined potential permitting requirements, designed and conducted aquatic toxicity testing program with product and with effluents from product field trials.
- Confidential Client - Chemicals from Tire Wear in Highway Runoff and Aquatic Sediments.
- Evaluated potential for sediment contamination by tire-derived chemicals in highway runoff. Designed monitoring program to measure chemical concentrations in sediment retention devices and ambient sediments receiving runoff from high traffic areas.
- Confidential Client - Analysis and Evaluation of Environmental Data on Water Treatment Products.
- As part of product stewardship program for a large specialty chemical company, developed environmental profiles of five water treatment products. Compiled data on aquatic toxicity of products and their components; determined contribution of each component to overall product toxicity; identified components resistant to biodegradation.
